I have a trip to Asia coming up Jan 15 and need to plan for the worst, in light of the TSA panic produced by the PETN bomber:
1. I definitiely need to check a bag, since only 1 carryon bag is likely to be allowed from here on out.
2. My checked bag needs to have some duplilcate bathroom stuff, especially eye saline, in case in a further panic TSA decides at the last minute to ban ALL carryon liquids (I can't replace my carry on saline, since I use the preserative free version which is hard to find).
3. I need to have a "mini kit" packed inside my Steves Classic one-bag carryon, in case the Steves is deemed too big or heavy. I would just make sure the netbook, toiletries, Ex Officio travel pants, syn tee shirt, wool socks, and "seat side" items can be modularly removed so the rest of the Classic can be checked.
4. I need to offload my jiu jitsu uniform into my checked bag, so keep room available in the Steves Classic one-bag for the stuff I had been planning on carrying in my "personal bag" (netbook, neck pillow, novel, snacks, etc.).
5. I need to layer up more – since blankets will be forbidden on the last leg, and who knows, may be banned altogether. The Steves Classic one-bag needs room left over for stowing this stuff when I arrive in the hot tropics.
I'm glad I got the Steves Classic, the compression straps will help me adjust the size as needed.
Did I miss anything? Other than opting out of air travel for a while after I complete this trip?
What boils me is that the TSA security people are refusing to give clear guidelines at this point because they want to keep the terrorists guessing. Which also keeps us guessing. Remember when travelers suddenly had to dump all their toiletries in the trash, without warning, when the liquids limit was first imposed?
