Shoes for travel should be lightweight, easy to put on and to take off, versatile in that they work with a suit or casual dress, and they should be quite water resistant and very comfortable.

The Cole Haan Air Jackson Two-Gore Slip-on (available in black and brown) hits a home run on each of these requirements. It is so good I bought another pair as a back-up.

For my first pair I paid full price and I think that is fully justifiable and I am quite the shoe aficionado. At $130 it is unbeatable. Get a pair while they still make them.

They look really nice; I had a pair of Cole Haan loafers years ago and loved them.  The only issue I had was the leather was so soft, they didn't last particularly long.  Can I assume you've had good luck with these from a durability standpoint?

Also, I wonder if I were to look elsewhere, if they're available in brown… ?

Bert, really good idea on the key ring. That might actually be a good permanent solution that doesn't look too bad, either. Cool!

The Air Jacksons are indeed available in a very nice, very dark coffee brown. You have to shop around a little. I actually saw them in both colors at the local Cole Haan store for $140 now.

Durability. You are right that the leather is very soft. It's a nappa leather. So mine are a bit roughed up from sharp bits under the seat. I since pay a little more attention and no more damage has happened.

Several Cole-Haan models are on sale at Macy's online.  The Pinch Cup Penny Loafer, an old favorite that's plenty nice enough for work but equally suited to jeans, is on sale for $99 – it's normally $148.  Free shipping and a 15% Off coupon get the price down to $84.99, which is a steal.  Available in 3 colors.  I don't know how long this offer will last; click here(2/3/2010 Update:  they're now at the regular price.) These are quite different than the shoes Till mentioned, but what they have in common are good looks, high quality, and a slip-on style, always important when traveling these days.  I ordered a pair today (Merry Christmas!).

The Pinch Cup Penny Loafer is pictured above; click here for a listing of the Cole-Haan shoes which are on sale at Macy's.

On my wish list:  Mephisto Warriors.  Sporting prices that are crash cart worthy, Mephisto's are widely considered one of the finest walking shoes available anywhere.  On Sale at Orvis for $314 – believe it or not, this is  the lowest price I've ever seen on this shoe:

Mephisto Warrior @ Orvis

I'll expand upon my comments made earlier in this thread:  the Cole-Haan Pinch Cup Penny Loafers are nice shoes, but for walking miles while sight seeing or – for example – walking a trade show, they're not the equal of the Air Jacksons mentioned earlier in this thread.

Certainly a bit funky and workmanlike looking, the Warriors are nevertheless high on my Wish List for practical walking shoes that you could still wear with a pair of khakis and a sports jacket.

For those who travel to Germany, Mephistos should be a good bit cheaper there and the choice larger. Ecco is another brand to look for. As is Geox and Rockport.

Oh, and the Mephistos look pretty terrible. In most cases one would be better dressed with simple all black sneakers than with those. In Germany they have a reputation of being the shoes of petit-bourgeois high school teachers in their 50s. This is now changing somewhat as younger teachers are coming but still.

For what it's worth, I've done the art basel fair in very light moccasin slippers. All day long, ten hours or more. My feet were fine. There is a sytem to simlicity. When I do the same thing in very good, very expensive shoes or even in running shoes I will feel my feet more at the end of the day (in a bad sense).

There are some nice looking Mephisto designs but some of the casuals are weird. When you buy one, however, it will last years and years and get more comfortable over time. They are not lightweight, though.

Here's another option – dressy enough for casual dining, yet perfectly ok with jeans or even a pair of shorts – the Sebago Clovehitch II boat shoe:

Available from a variety of retailers in 6 or 7 different color combinations; $95.  See them at OnlineShoes.com or Zappos.

Kevin, Till,

Cole Haan now has the Pinch style loafers available with Nike Air support.  Also, the soles should be more durable than the originals since they now have rubber insets in the high wear areas.

Those are closer to the design Cole Haan offered a decade ago, and frankly nicer than the ones I bought at Macy's.  Doh!  Thanks for the find, though.

I bought a pair of the Clovehitch II Sebagos, and can report that they are comfortable out of the box, and (to my eye, anyway) distinctive and good looking.

An update, of sorts:  I've had a pair of Sebago Clovehitch II's for a few months now, and love them.  They were comfortable out of the box and of course are distinctive.  These are NOT walking shoes, and don't quite have the comfort factor that true walking shoes have, but I love them nevertheless.

I recently tried a pair of Rockport Pro Walkers, but returned them.  They were comfortable, but nothing outstanding.  YMMV; they just weren't what I hoped for.

Finally, and this is perhaps a bit unusual, I've ordered a pair of the Ecco "Street Premier" shoes Freddy Couples has been wearing this year on the Champions and PGA Tour.  For the uninitiated, they are cleatless golf shoes that can be worn on the street, and are apparently very comfortable.  Fred has suggested that they've helped his back (he's suffers chronic lower back pain) issues.  They're $139, available from several retailers, and because Freddy's been wearing them, are backordered.  They look like a cross between a boat shoe and a sneaker, BTW.  I ordered mine from TGW.com  Once they arrive (theoretically in early May), I'll post a quick review.

So… you're buying these as golf shoes, or walking shoes…..   or both??
