Can you tell me some good Iphone apps you use while traveling. I just checked out urbanspoon and it's quite nice. That would also make a great blog post, Kevin.

Thanks,

Till

Till,

Great subject.  I've actually posted about this topic twice – this is the initial post, a "Top 10" list  – and a follow-up post regarding Skype for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Another app that's not mentioned in those posts but is worth checking out is USA Today's Autopilot.  Some of its features are similar to TripIt and FlightTrack, but it also offers info on airport delays, a directory of phone numbers for airlines, hotels, and rental car companies, weather info, and more.  It's free.

Perhaps Forum members have some other suggestions!

Last week I found out about a TripIt-type app called WorldMate. They add an interesting feature for heavy duty fliers: A yearly subscription which will push notify you when your flights are delayed or cancelled. When it's a cancellation it will offer alternative flight options and hotel options in situ.

I haven't used either the free or pay version, I just don't fly enough to make use of them (or TripIt).

New iPhone App, “SURVEY ON THE SPOT,” Enables Air Travelers to Take TSA Survey Rating Airport Security Screening

December 31, 2009, Boston, Mass. -  On The Spot Systems, Inc., announced today that their iPhone application, SURVEY ON THE SPOT, is now available to air travelers to rate airport security screening by completing a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) survey.  SURVEY ON THE SPOT uses the iPhone's GPS to identify the user's location and enables smartphone users to answer a TSA questionnaire quickly and easily immediately after passing through the security checkpoint.

Well, the travel apps list here and at FT is pretty ok to start with. Of course, you can also check out the Travel category on the Itunes store and just browse. It took me some time to find how you see the categories. They are in a drop down menu in the Apps tab on top. I think that is not a good place and would have integrated the categories in a sidebar a la Amazon. Anyways, it's there.

So now two apps that make sense when traveling and in everyday life. They are both free.

One is called "To Do Lists" and it does just that. You can create your own to do lists. You can make them date sensitive (with reminder alarms) or just use it as a simple check list, for example as a packing list or as a list of what to do before you leave the house (ever forgot to empty the garbage?). You check items as done by swiping over them with a finger. This will put a green check mark in the box next to them. Lists are re-usable, nameable, editable and can be copied from one spot to another. Each item in the list can have notes added to it. So you could write toiletries as a check item and then add the specific toiletries in a note box to it.

I made three lists. One for the main bag, one for the briefcase and one for travel essentials that I carry on my person. This also helps very nicely for when you are re-packing and don't want to forget anything at the hotel. You can configure as many lists as you like. I really like it. There is another app (not free) that's called Packing List and it has "prepackaged" packing lists that you can configure. But the simple to do lists work just fine and it's free.

The second app is called Taxi. It uses the location finder in the Iphone 3GS and when you click on it, it gives you the closest taxi companies in your current city and then you just click on the number to call. Couldn't be easier.
