  1. HMMMM? If that’s all the big names can come up with I am thoroughly underwhelmed. Lackluster consumer products in candy colors with an utterly uninspired design. As if they had sucked the brain, fun and passion right out of it.

On the technical side a full HD video camera the size of two packs of cigarettes with a 20x optical zoom for $500 is pretty neat. That I must admit. Remember the first video cameras? That’s what I call progress.

It makes products like the Ricoh cameras or the Canon G11 or S90 stand out just the more.

These cameras remind me of people who have photos taken of themselves in front of tourist attractions. Even as a child I thought that was not only uninteresting but also below my dignity. Seriously. As an eight year old I would refuse having such pictures taken by my relatives. I just never got it. On the other hand, when I see a couple who wants a picture like that taken I often offer my services without being asked and always agree to do it when I am asked. At least this way, they get a good picture and are sure nobody runs away with their camera.

On one occasion I was celebrating my birthday at the Hancock center of Chicago. I took the camera mainly to shoot some pics out of the restaurant windows. Shots came out alright. There was a young man who proposed that evening (successfully). But he didn’t have a camera. So I took some pics with mine (G9) and gave them my card so they could write me an email. She then wrote and asked for the photo which I sent. They loved it!
