I bought one of these jackets this morning as a replacement for an old Dockers golf jacket that’s served me well for around 8 or 9 years. The TravelRite jacket, normally $89, is priced at $49.99 at Magellan’s. No end date is listed, and sizes Small and Medium are available in a choice of Beige or Black.
From Magellan’s:
The TravelRite Microfiber Jacket offers lightweight, waterproof, breathable protection for year-round travel. This mesh-lined (yet lightweight) jacket keeps wind and rain from putting a damper on your travels. Its many features include fully taped seams to keep out water, full zipper with storm flap, and adjustable cuffs. The contoured hood with adjustable drawcord and visor rolls up and stores inside the collar. Handy internal security and outside storage pockets make this jacket a great travel choice. It even stores in its own pocket, which doubles as a pillow! Made of 100% breathable rip-stop nylon with an adjustable drawcord at the hem. Imported.

Very cool! I am a huge proponent of the travel anorak. I own a Cole Haan (Model is actually called “Travel Anorak”) which I got on sale for $150 instead of $450.
Specs are very similar to this one but mine is longer. This is very important for two reasons. When you sit down you can cover your rear (think not so clean benches and bus seats, or simply cold). And it will cover a sportcoat worn under it. The more blouson style length of the Magellan version lacks this important feature. Unfortunately, even the otherwise seemingly great Scotevest jackets are not long enough. Why they don’t get that is beyond me!!!
List of pros for wearing a travel anorak:
- Pockets allow for extra storage (think of heavy gadgets like PSU)
- this makes a daypack superfluous
- water-repellant and wind-proof material will protect you well against the weather while being lighter than a full coat
- easier to stow than a full coat
- One can sit in the car with it without taking it off
- if it has a hood (Only buy one with hood) it obviates the need for an umbrella
So for me, a travel anorak is one of the smartest accessories for the well-versed traveler. It’s as important as a good bag if not more so. The problem is finding one that is long enough, doesn’t look out of place with a suit (if you wear suits) and has a hood.

Inspired by this post, I started a little thread on travel anoraks on FT. There are also some suggestions for the ladies already. And I made a check list for the features a good travel anorak should ideally have. Check it out here:
