Seeking some excitement but out of ideas? About to visit a town you’re unfamiliar with and looking for things to do? Check out Goby.com, a search engine that’s a new entrant into the field of “deep web” search technology.
Goby’s interface couldn’t be simpler: there are 3 fields – “What would you like to do?,” “Where,” and “When?” (Click on any of these images to see a close-up)…
You can begin typing in the first field, or simply use the drop down menus to navigate to whatever interests you:
In this case I’ve selected “art events” and have begun typing in San Francisco, prompting another drop down menu; after selecting the Bay area, I left the “When” field as “anytime”…
Clicking on the Search button produces a list of events, along with a Google map. You can move the blue “your location” flag to wherever you prefer, and of course you can zoom in and out on the map:
In the following case I searched for golf courses in the Saratoga Springs, NY area:
Whether you’re looking for restaurant ideas, theatre, sporting events, places to stay (there are over 200 categories, but they’re quickly navigated), Goby utilizes over 500 data sources or “deep web” databases to return results. Restaurants include reviews from sites like Yelp, by the way. A Goby iPhone app is also in the works.
