The Perfect Place to Take a Book

Winter is quickly approaching and our days for playing golf here in Nebraska are nearly gone. The temps were in the mid 50′s on Saturday and the high on Sunday was perhaps 50; a few friends and I managed to play both days. In addition to our normal Nassau bets we played animal golf; I’ll have to post about that game next spring – it’s a lot of fun!

Unfortunately, this was a frustrating season for me. I hit my irons as well as I ever have, my driver was pretty consistent, and my short game (with a caveat) was very solid. My putting, a strong point for at least the last few years (I’ve played for a total of ten years,) was a bit weaker this year…  and probably resulted in my adding a couple of strokes per round on average.

At the outset of the season my handicap was 5.7; at the last update it was 6.8 (the GHIN system plots this in a manner which seems backward; the most recent updates are on the left in the following chart) (you can tell I haven’t posted a lot of scores this fall) -

…so from that standpoint it’s been a disappointing season. One highlight – each fall the 12 best players over the age of 40 at our Club play the 12 best players under 40 in a two day Ryder Cup-style match.  My record of playing very well in that event remains unscathed. I went 2-0-1 this year and after three years my record is 6-2-1 (wins-losses-halves.)  But in the end, over the course of the season I simply didn’t play as well as I’d hoped and that’s frustrating as I’m certainly capable of getting my index down to the 4-5 range.  Well… there’s always next year. One of the great things about the game is that you always have a goal in front of you, and you always want to improve. Kinda like life, isn’t it?

On to a few links and sites I found interesting this past week:

Presentation Zen offers up T. Boone Pickens presenting The Pickens Plan in a combination of a white board presentation and animated slides.  The slides amplify the simple story Pickens is telling. From the post:

Now, Pickens does not get into great detail, but he gives you the story of the plan. In a live setting what would follow from this is lots of discussion, elaboration, and good Q & A, but in the first four minutes you got the story…and you want to hear more. That’s how leaders communicate.

To see the ~4 minute presentation, click here.

If you’re the type of shopper who heads out at an insanely early hour on Black Friday (if you are, God bless you; I’ll be sleeping in,) you ought to check out BFads.net  The site features leaked Black Friday ads, enabling you to plan exactly where you’ll go or which deals you’ll chase the day after Thanksgiving. Quite an array of ads are already posted on the site including Wal-Mart, Office Max and many others.  CLICK HERE to visit the site.

If you enjoy wine at all and haven’t checked out Gary Vaynerchuk and Wine Library TV.com, you’re missing out on something that’s equally entertaining and educational.  In episode 581, Gary does a blind tasting of 5 California cabs.  I’m always amazed at how much he can perceive and articulate about each wine,- it’s truly remarkable.  Click here to see this fun episode.

Finally, someone at Twitter mentioned this article at NicheGeek.com If all else fails during the economic slowdown, you could always come up with a preposterous idea that makes you a millionaire.  Some of these are truly wacky (see sunglasses-wearing canine above;) check out the entire article by clicking here – it’s a fun  read!

Have a great week. I hope you’ll be able to be with your family this Thanksgiving!
