“Anonymous” left a comment overnight which I now regret having deleted; it referred to yesterday’s post about car detailing. It said, in its entirety: “screw you. this is an ad.”

My initial reaction was disappointment and a bit of irritation. My deleting the comment was instinctive; I wish I’d thought about it a bit more before hurriedly hitting the delete button.

Ultimately though, it made me question whether I’d made a mistake in strongly recommending a specific line of products: perhaps I went too far?

In any event, this is my response.

In certain respects, I suppose the poster is right. That lengthy post is sort of an ad – it’s my enthusiastic recommendation about a product I love. As I mention in the post, for most of my life I never really knew anything about car detailing, and in the course of researching the topic I learned about a product that I’ve since learned to trust and really appreciate. It’s saved me time, and made my vehicles look much better. I derive genuine pleasure from using it. And frankly I’m sure part of it is that I enjoy having people ask, “What on earth are you using on your bike’s (or car’s) paint? – It looks great!”

It occurred to me that this might be of interest and value to some of you, so I wrote about it.

It’s all too common to encounter crappy products and disappointing customer service today. When I find something that’s really good or a company that offers extraordinary customer service, I want to share it with friends. That’s the only reason I wrote the post. I hope some of you enjoyed it and learned something you didn’t know.

Please comment – I’d really be interested in your thoughts. Let me know if you think I’m wrong or perhaps went too far.

Have a great day, and enjoy the final round of the Masters! You too, Anonymous.
